Start Your Super Sunday Group

Thank you for your interest in starting a Souper Sunday group! Feeding your neighbors, building community, and making a positive impact in your area is an experience you’ll never regret. Souper Sunday has changed lives, including my own. When we give, we receive—it’s what I call the “Sacred Circle of Giving and Receiving.” The most important step is simply to begin, and we’re here to support you every step of the way!

Start making free soup for anyone today.

  • Step 1: Getting Started

Start small—just start! Pick a day that works best for you and commit to making soup once a week. Begin with a manageable amount, like six portions, which can take as little as two hours, including distribution. Making it fun will encourage you to continue!

  • Step 2: Create a Facebook Group

A Facebook group is the best way to organize and communicate with your community.

    • Name your group with “Souper Sunday” and your location (e.g., Souper Sunday – Springfield, East Side).
    • Set your group to public so it’s easy to find.
    • Read and agree to the mission statement and rules before getting started.
    • Copy and paste the rules and about information from the Souper Sunday website into your own page.
    • Invite friends, share in local “Buy Nothing” groups, and reach out to food pantries or community organizations. Pretty soon you will create your own community!

  • Step 3: Choose a Distribution Point

Find a location that works for you, such as:

    • Your home – A front porch or covered area can serve as a pickup point.
    • A local church or community center – Some locations may welcome you to distribute from their space.
    • A partnership – If you live in a rural area, team up with someone in a more accessible location for distribution.

You decide what works best, whether it’s a set pickup time (e.g., 5:00–6:00 PM) or a flexible system.

  • Step 4: Make Some Soup!

When making soup, keep in mind folks may have dietary needs, restrictions and/or allergies:

    • Always list ingredients so people can make informed choices.
    • Rotate vegetarian, vegan, and meat-based options to be inclusive.
    • Consider freezing leftover portions for future distribution. Some soups freeze better than others. Avoid freezing pasta-heavy soups. Dairy-based soups don’t freeze well, so if freezing substitute with coconut milk or other non-dairy alternatives.

    Containers:

    • The best option for single servings are 16 oz. paper soup containers (available at restaurant supply stores).
    • Never put hot soup in plastic containers. If using repurposed yogurt or other plastic containers make sure the soup has been cooled.

Additional Tips and Best Practices

  • Kindness is key. Treat your members with respect, and don’t tolerate unkindness in your group.
  • No cash donations. Instead, request grocery store gift cards for ingredient donations.
